Overall Sales Increase

– October 2023 witnessed a substantial increase in new vehicle sales, totalling 106,809 units.

– This marks a significant surge of 22.3% compared to October 2022, representing an additional 19,510 vehicle sales.

2023 Australian Car Sales Record: The Details

The achievement becomes even more remarkable as, in the past six months, five months have seen all-time sales records broken compared to previous years. In October alone, a staggering 106,809 new vehicles were delivered to Australian customers, showcasing the sustained momentum in the automotive sector.

FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Weber, said that this achievement was a strong indicator of the automotive industry and sales in Australia.

“The Australian market has demonstrated incredible strength and vitality throughout 2023, culminating in Australia reaching one million sales in October for the first time, Mr Weber said.

“After some challenging years through COVID, this milestone speaks to the range of vehicles available to consumers, affirming Australia’s position as one of the world’s most dynamic and competitive markets. It also reflects vastly improved supply chains.

“In the past six months, five have broken all-time sales records compared with previous years and in October 106,809 new vehicles were delivered to Australian customers.”

Breaking down the October figures, 38.3% of sales were attributed to light commercial utes, large, or upper-large SUVs, highlighting the enduring popularity of these vehicle categories. In contrast, electric vehicle (EV) sales softened, representing 5.7% of the market.

Moreover, the positive sales trend extended across all States and Territories, with noticeable increases compared to October 2022. The Australian Capital Territory led the charge with a sales increase of 18.9%, followed by New South Wales (22.8%), Queensland (16.4%), South Australia (20%), Tasmania (20.8%), Victoria (32%), Western Australia (12.3%), and the Northern Territory (1.9%).

In terms of the automotive marques dominating the market, Toyota claimed the top spot with 20,298 sales, reaffirming its strong presence. Mazda followed closely with 9,316 sales, trailed by Ford (8,605), Hyundai (6,620), and Mitsubishi (6,395).

When it comes to individual vehicle models, the Ford Ranger secured its position as the top-selling vehicle, recording an impressive 6,215 sales. The Toyota HiLux followed suit with 5,766 sales, followed by the Isuzu Ute D-Max (3,198), Toyota RAV4 (2,598), and the Toyota Landcruiser (2,561).
