What is DAB? Quite simply, DAB or digital radio operates alongside the traditional AM/FM spectrum bands, providing an efficient alternative for broadcasting.

DAB+ in Australia adheres to the newer ‘plus’ standard, DAB+, introduced in 2011. The main difference from the older DAB is increased efficiency due to AAC+ encoding, making DAB+ three times more efficient.

How to Access DAB+

To enjoy digital radio, you’ll need a DAB+ compatible receiver. Most new cars come equipped with it, but it’s essential to confirm during the car-buying process. For older vehicles, aftermarket headunits or standalone receivers can be added to the aux input.

Benefits of DAB+

DAB+ offers more stations within a given spectrum and can transmit additional information like track details, traffic, and news. The audio quality is superior, free from static and interference, providing an experience better than AM and comparable to or surpassing FM.

Drawbacks to Consider

Despite its advantages, DAB+ has limitations. If the spectrum is overcrowded, the audio quality may suffer. Additionally, DAB+ reception is binary – it’s either on or off – which can result in signal dropouts in fringe suburbs and areas with limited coverage.

Hybrid Digital Radio and Mobile Streaming

Some newer cars feature ‘hybrid digital radio,’ using cellular data to maintain a seamless radio signal in areas with poor DAB+ reception. Alternatively, mobile apps like RadioApp, Pandora, and Spotify offer digital radio streams, providing excellent sound quality through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay but consuming data.

Tuning In and Antenna Options

Tuning in to DAB+ is user-friendly; no manual searching is required. Simply navigate to the digital radio or DAB+ section. While external antennas can enhance signal strength, installation may require significant modifications to the car.

FM vs. DAB+

The subjective preference for FM over DAB+ may stem from the potential quality drop when too many DAB+ stations share a spectrum. FM, being wavelength-based, does not face this issue.

Choosing a DAB+-Equipped Car

To determine which new cars come with DAB+, check the official Digital Radio Plus website for a comprehensive list.

Most new cars come with DAB, and this isn’t something that will add a huge cost. However, with the semiconductor shortage this was a feature missing from some cars (and still might be). So when you are talking to the salesperson, make sure to ask if the car comes with a DAB-compatible radio.
